How to Remove Vape Juice from a Tank or Pod
Most of the vape juice on the market today is good to great. Most of the smallest players have left the market over the past few years, and the e-liquid brands that remain are generally large and very professional. They use extensive automation to ensure that every bottle is completely identical, and the flavors are usually tried-and-true formulas that most people enjoy. You may not love every bottle that you buy, but you’ll probably at least like most of them.
Once in a while, though, you may end up with a clunker. You don’t like it. You don’t want to vape it, and you definitely want to get it out of your tank or pod as soon as possible. Emptying a vape tank is actually a pretty simple process – but that’s not really why you’re here. When you ask how to remove the vape juice from a tank, what you’re really asking is how to remove the flavor of that juice from the tank. That’s a bit more complicated because of an issue called flavor ghosting, which causes your tank to taste like your previous e-liquid even though you’ve refilled it with a different flavor.
So, this is a topic that we need to approach from two angles. If you need help figuring out how to remove the vape juice from your tank, we’ll cover that in the first part of this guide. In the second part, we’ll talk about how to remove the offending flavor from your tank or pod, so you can switch to a new flavor and enjoy it fully. Are you ready? It’s time to gain a little knowledge.
How to Remove the Vape Juice from a Vape Tank
If you’re using a traditional glass vape tank, you’re in luck because emptying a sub-ohm tank is very easy. Glass vape tanks are designed for easy disassembly, which makes it possible to replace worn parts or fix the tank if the glass breaks. Here’s what you need to do.
- Unscrew the tank’s bottom hardware, which is the same thing that you do when installing a new coil.
- Invert the tank over a sink to dump the Vape Juice Rinse it down the drain.
How to Remove the Vape Juice from a Vape Pod
Removing the e-liquid from a vape pod is a little more difficult than emptying a vape tank because of how small a vape pod is. You inject the vape juice into a tiny hole when you fill a pod, and the e-liquid has to come out through that same hole if you want to empty the pod. Here’s what you need to do.
- Remove the pod from your device and open the filling plug.
- Hold the pod over a sink and tap it gently until all of the vape juice comes out. Rinse it down the drain.
Want to Get All of the Vape Juice Out? Replace Your Coil
As we explained in the article’s introduction, removing the vape juice from a tank is the easy part – getting the flavor out is the thing that’s difficult. We’ll cover that next, but the most important thing to know is that if you want to remove an unwanted vape juice flavor from your tank or pod completely, you really need to replace the coil if you can. The coil’s wick holds more e-liquid than you might think, and there’s no easy way to remove all of it. If you’re using a pod system with a built-in coil, removing the coil obviously isn’t an option; in this case, you should consider replacing the entire pod.
At the end of this guide, we’ll discuss a strategy for removing the e-liquid flavor from a tank or pod when replacing the coil isn’t possible. If you can replace the coil or pod, though, that’s definitely what you should do.
How to Clean the Vape Juice Out of a Tank or Pod
In this section of our guide, we’ll assume that you’re using a tank or pod with a removable coil and have thrown the coil away. If you can’t or don’t want to do that, read the section after this one for some advice about how to get the e-liquid flavor out of your coil. Right now, though, it’s time to clean the vape juice residue out of your tank or pod. Here’s how to do it.
- If you’re using a vape tank, disassemble it completely and rinse all of the components in the sink. Make sure to rinse all of the nooks and crannies, such as the tank’s airflow vents and in/under the mouthpiece. Dry every component thoroughly with a paper towel. You especially want to make sure that the base is completely dry because water can interfere with the coil working properly. Install a new coil and reassemble/fill the tank.
- If you’re using a pod system, disassembling the pod isn’t really possible. Instead, you’ll need to rinse the pod out by holding it under a faucet and filling it with water. Tap the pod to eject the water. Repeat this a few times until the pod seems clean, and you can’t really smell the old e-liquid anymore. You can do this even if the pod doesn’t have a replaceable coil. If the coil is replaceable, install a new coil and refill the pod.
How to Remove the Flavor from a Tank or Pod if You Can’t Replace the Coil
As we’ve mentioned more than once in this article, completely removing an old e-liquid flavor from a tank or pod isn’t easy if you can’t or don’t want to replace the coil. It’s like putting food coloring in a bottle of water and then pouring most of the water out. You can top up the bottle with clear water, but you’ll still see some trace of the color. While you’re in the process of flushing your tank or pod, you’ll still taste at least a little of the old e-liquid flavor.
If you want to get through this process as quickly as possible, the trick is to not refill your tank or pod completely. Instead, just add enough so that the vape juice covers the coil’s wick openings. Use the tank or pod until it’s empty and add a little more e-liquid. Don’t fill the tank completely until you can’t taste the old flavor anymore. This will likely take a while, but it’ll allow you to flush the old flavor out without replacing the coil.
